Giving

Giving is the capacity to contribute voluntarily without turning generosity into self-erasure or hidden debt.

What this capacity means

Giving is the capacity to contribute voluntarily without turning generosity into self-erasure or hidden debt.

People give attention, labor, affection, knowledge, time, money and care.

Healthy giving contains choice.

It is not simply what remains after everyone else’s needs have been served.

Nor is giving a covert contract in which the recipient is expected to repay something they never agreed to owe.

The capacity to give freely includes knowing when the answer is no.

Generosity becomes sustainable when the giver remains present inside the act.
