Perspective

Perspective is the capacity to move beyond a single viewpoint without losing the ability to stand somewhere.

What this capacity means

Perspective is the capacity to move beyond a single viewpoint without losing the ability to stand somewhere.

It lets us ask what a situation looks like from another person’s position, from a longer time horizon or from outside our own immediate emotional state.

Perspective does not require pretending every interpretation is equally accurate.

Its function is to expand the field of information before judgment hardens.

In practice, perspective often arrives through a deceptively simple thought:

“There may be something here I cannot see from where I am standing.”

That sentence makes learning possible.
