Boundaries are the capacity to recognize, communicate and maintain distinctions concerning access, responsibility, time, touch, emotional labor and obligation.
Boundaries are the capacity to recognize, communicate and maintain distinctions concerning access, responsibility, time, touch, emotional labor and obligation.
A boundary is not simply a sentence beginning with “You cannot.”
Often it is a decision about what you will participate in.
“I can stay for an hour.”
“I’m not available for that conversation tonight.”
“I don’t want to be touched there.”
Boundaries make relationship clearer because they allow two people to remain two people.
Without them, connection easily becomes guessing, resentment or fusion.
A boundary is not the opposite of intimacy.
Very often it is what lets intimacy become trustworthy.
