Intuition

Intuition is the capacity to register patterns before conscious reasoning has fully articulated them.

What this capacity means

Intuition is the capacity to register patterns before conscious reasoning has fully articulated them.

The body and brain are continuously processing more information than reaches deliberate awareness. Sometimes the result arrives first as a sense that something fits, does not fit or deserves attention.

That makes intuition useful.

It does not make intuition infallible.

Past experience, fear, prejudice and familiarity can also produce rapid impressions. Mature intuition therefore works in conversation with evidence and reflection.

Instead of asking, “Is my intuition always right?”, a more useful question is:

“What is this signal asking me to investigate?”

Intuition can open an inquiry without having to close it.
